Spend The Day Hunting For Fossils On Kodiak Island In Alaska

Fossil Beach on Kodiak Island offers fossil hunting, scenic views, and wildlife spotting, making it a unique destination.

If you're trying to find something to do, then head out and look for fossils on Kodiak Island. Fossil Beach is located at the very end of Pagashack Road in Kodiak, and filled with fascinating discoveries. Bring a picnic and plan a day at this amazing beach!

Kodiak Island has some absolutely awe-inspiring views.

One particular park, the Pasagshak River State Recreation Site, encompasses 25 beautiful acres. You can camp in their campground, or go fishing for trout and salmon.

The park abuts the stunning Fossil Beach.

Sitting in between towering cliffs, this beach is at the mouth of a river that feeds into the ocean. At the base of these cliffs, you'll find many types of fossils embedded in the rock.

As you go hunting among the rocks, you'll find seashells and mollusks embedded within the rock face.

You'll find all manner of sea creatures, and even flora embedded into the rocks. Many of the fossils are lodged into the shale of the cliff.

The fossils are only available at low tide, so make sure that you time your travel to the tide table.

If you hit the right timing you'll have quite a few hours to spend exploring all of the hidden treasures. By the time the tide comes back in, it will be a great time for a break.

There's more to this beach than just fossil hunting.

There's actually great surfing at the beach, and you will frequently see talented surfers out among the surf. There is also great wildlife spotting as bison tend to roam through this area.

If you need to use any park facilities you'll have to travel back to Pasagshak River State Recreation Site.

Otherwise, this area is a quiet spot to rest and relax. You can feel the breeze off the ocean, and watch large pods of whales travel by the shore.

This makes for a lovely day trip to explore more of Kodiak Island's allure.

Put this on the list next time you want a beautiful drive and to hunt for fossils. This is one of the most interesting beaches in all of Alaska!
