One of the most haunted places in Alabama is Huntsville's Maple Hill Cemetery. It's not so much the cemetery that's haunted, but a kid-friendly attraction that's hidden within it. This attraction is known as Dead Children's Playground. This haunted playground in Alabama attracts numerous paranormal investigators from near and far, and you can read all about it below. (It's definitely one of those creepy places in Alabama you'll want to add to your must-visit list.)
Established in 1822, Maple Hill Cemetery is Huntsville, Alabama's oldest cemetery. Covering 100 acres, it's also the city's largest cemetery.
More than 80,000 people are buried at Maple Hill Cemetery. And according to the cemetery department, that number could be as high as 100,000. During the Civil War, nearly 200 Confederate soldiers were buried here, in addition to many Union soldiers.
Tucked away among a group of trees in Maple Hill Cemetery is Dead Children's Playground, which is supposedly haunted by children buried nearby. According to local legend, the spirits of these children come out to play between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Another legend is that the bodies of several children who were abducted from the area in the 1960s were found where this Huntsville haunted playground now sits.
Many people who have visited Dead Children's Playground have witnessed some very strange things, including swings moving on their own and the ghosts of children playing. Many have also reported hearing the sounds of laughter and children calling out. And if that's not strange enough, several people have even discovered orbs of light in their Dead Children's Playground photos after having them developed. Very strange indeed!
