10 Things Everyone In Washington DC Should Avoid At All Costs
DC is a really great place to live… most of the time. But like every city there are some things here that are just frustrating. Admittedly, most of these revolve around transportation and getting around but here are 10 things everyone in Washington DC should avoid.
During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.
1. Missing a turn on the Whitehurst Freeway
One minute you know you’re going to be at your destination on time and the next you’ve missed a turn and you know you’ll be 45 minutes late, because it will take at least 20 to get yourself turned around.
2. Being near the Tidal Basin during Cherry Blossom season
The Cherry Blossom season is one of the prettiest seasons in DC but let’s be honest, the influx of tourists can be stressful.
3. Election season
When many of the residents of the area are involved in politics and many of the politicians work in the area, election season is a stressful time in DC. It’s best to just stay locked in your house until it ends.
4. Chain restaurants
There are so many amazing restaurants in DC. From fine dining to small Mom and Pop’s, you can find everything and anything you want here. So why go to a restaurant you can find anywhere in the country?
5. Chain coffee places
The same goes for coffee places. With so many unique craft coffee places in the area, there’s no need for any chain coffee.
6. Going to the store the night before anyone calls for snow
DC freaks out when there is even the slightest chance of snow. Be prepared for long lines and empty shelves if you dare to stop into a store the night before a potential storm.
7. Driving near Dupont Circle
It’s confusing, always busy and pedestrians never seem to follow street signs. That circle has gotten even the most patient of drivers.
8. Parking tickets
Parking is few and far between in DC and if you do happen to find a coveted spot, make sure you check the signs. The parking times can be off and there’s always one random street cleaning day that could cost you!
9. Driving in rush hour
Avoid the Beltway at all costs!
10. Track work
Single tracking on the metro is the worst. Except for when the Metro isn’t running at all and you have to take shuttles. Basically the WMATA and their never-ending maintenance is a thorn in Washingtonians side.
These are the 10 things you need to avoid in DC.
And maybe you just shouldn’t move here at all. But if you do end up in DC, you’ll know why DC has a special place in our heart… even with these 10 annoying things.
