There are so many options for weekend trips in Connecticut that it can be overwhelming to choose one. Whether you're looking for outdoor adventures, to explore the state's historical side, or are in the mood for some scenic beauty, the Nutmeg State has something for everyone. One of the best spots for a short getaway is the town of Windham. With history, scenic beauty, and attractions galore, you'll find plenty to entertain you here.
Windham is made up of Willimantic and several boroughs. The city has a population of around 25,000.
One thing you'll notice in the Willimantic area is the presence of frogs everywhere, including on the famous Frog Bridge. The bridge depicts frogs sitting atop spools of thread.
Frogs have long been a symbol of Willimantic thanks to a 1754 "battle of the frogs." Residents were awakened in the night to raucous sounds and believed the town was under attack. They found out the next morning that the sounds were simply frogs.
Frogs were so closely associated with the town that the Windham Bank even released banknotes with frogs on them!
Another important aspect of Windham's history is textile production. You can learn all about the city's success in the textile industry at the Windham Textile and History Museum.
Anyone with knowledge of the history of Connecticut knows that railroads played an important role in the state's development. You can see antique rail cars on display at Windham's Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum.
Depending on what time of year you visit, you'll be in for a tasty treat at Raspberry Knoll Farm. This u-pick farm in Windham features a variety of crops throughout the year, including flowers, berries, herbs, and veggies. The 65-acre farm is a blast for the whole family.
The Shaboo Stage is located downtown and you'll find all kinds of acts performing here during the warm months. Comedy shows, music festivals, and more occur here.
Walk through the downtown area and you'll be treated to the sight of many old homes.
This is such a great historic place for a weekend trip in Connecticut! What are some of your favorite places to visit in Windham?
