Transportation on a day trip can be a little bit of a hassle. Cars are convenient, don't get us wrong, but it can be irritating having to deal with traffic and figuring out where things are in an unfamiliar city. Many cities lack decent public transportation, and even if there is a good subway or bus system, timing the schedule properly can be difficult. One solution to this problem is to opt for walking for the day. It's better for the environment, easier on your wallet, and good for your health. When it comes to walkable cities in Connecticut, it doesn't get much better than New Haven. Many of the city's attractions are spread within a few blocks.

New Haven regularly ranks among the country's most walkable cities. Approximately 10-15% of Elm City residents walk to their jobs. The city's got a great mix of residential and business areas that make it more walkable than many places that tend to have more division between residential and commercial areas. The Wooster Square area of downtown has a great many attractions within just a few blocks. There are plentiful sidewalks and lots of shade.

Many college students either can't drive or don't bring their cars to school, so the high percentage of Yale students in New Haven certainly adds to the city's walkability.

How to Explore New Haven on Foot

There are so many great places within walking distance of residential areas in New Haven. In many cities, people have to drive an hour or more to see live music performances and other entertainment. In New Haven, we've got several centrally-located entertainment venues, like College Street Music Hall.

And, of course, there are plenty of restaurants near downtown New Haven, too! Frank Pepe Pizzeria is one of the most famous pizza restaurants in the country, and it's actually been voted the best pizza in the country. It's located right in Wooster Square and is quite accessible from most of downtown New Haven. There are also plenty of shops and museums that can be reached in New Haven's relatively small downtown area—perfect for finding a souvenir from your trip. The Yale Center for British Art makes for a great day trip, and it's admission-free!
