"New England" and "soul food" aren't exactly words you often see together on a regular basis. After all, we're pretty far away from the South here, both geographically and culturally speaking. Even our culinary scene is pretty distant from the South, and you're much more likely to find lobster rolls on the menu here than collard greens or hoppin' John. That doesn't mean you can't come across great Southern soul food restaurants in Connecticut, though. Take, for example, the unassuming Craig's in Vernon, CT. This tiny little restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside you'll find explosions of hearty flavor and some of the best soul food in Connecticut. Check it out:
Craig's Kitchen opened up in 2017, but has the sort of homey, familial atmosphere that makes it feel like it's been around for decades.
The restaurant is small and pretty unassuming, but boy, is it delicious!
The fried chicken is a staple of this spot, but there are all kinds of Southern goodies on the menu.
From macaroni and cheese to collard greens, there's an ever-changing array of sides to complete your tasty meal.
Of course, you should definitely opt for some cornbread on the side.
No matter what foods you choose, you're in for quite the treat at this Southern soul food gem. You'll almost feel like you were magically transported out of New England when dining here.
Yum, yum! I don't know about you, but I'm feeling hungry!
