We often feature easy hikes that everyone can enjoy. There are lots of great kid-friendly trails in Connecticut that are perfect for the entire family, even if you're not in the best of shape. With that being said, those of us who are more experienced hikers often love the challenge of a more difficult trail. We might not have the soaring peaks of the Rocky Mountains, but we do have some surprisingly tall summits here. One of the most scenic areas of the state is in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in Fairfield County. It's near there that you'll find Bennetts Pond State Park and Wooster Mountain State Park, home to one of the most challenging trails in Connecticut. If you're looking for a great way to check out these two state parks, you'll want to explore the Hemlock Hills and Pine Mountain Trail.
This trail is quite challenging, with a distance of over 7.5 miles and an elevation gain of over 1,100 feet. It takes about 3.5 hours for most hikers to complete the trails.
It's definitely a workout, but if you've ever enjoyed an arduous trek through the woods, there's so much pride that comes from accomplishing a hard hike in Connecticut.
Besides the endorphin rush, the views make for a pretty stellar reward, too.
Since much of the hike is shaded, you'll likely want to wear long pants to protect your skin from insects.
Keep your eyes peeled: lots of little critters call the forest home!
There are lots of trails in the surrounding area, so even if you don't think you're up for something of this length, there are plenty of other choices.
Next time you're feeling stressed with the struggles of everyday life, escape into the woods on a beautiful hike to find tranquility.
