Hummock Island is located on the Sherwood Mill Pond in Westport. It's so tiny that it looks like a house floating on water.
This unassuming spot is the home to a thriving oyster farm and you can take a guided tour of this inspiring place.
Tour takers will gather in front of Elvira's, a small Westport deli. From there you'll proceed across the street to the dock.
Your first glimpse of this thriving salt pond will amaze you. It's a little hidden gem that many people don't realize exists.
The boat ride takes about ten minutes and you will learn a bit about this special oyster habitat on your journey.
View the oyster cages lined up where these shellfish feed on algae, filter water, and grow. Each cage houses around 1000 oysters.
Once you reach Hummock Island, gather on the porch to continue learning about this family owned business and the process and history of oystering.
Fresh oysters will be shucked on the spot for you to taste. Savor the sweet briny flavor of these delicious delicacies.
The oyster bed tour is fun for all ages. Children are welcome to attend and those under 12 years of age are free.
