Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, is one of the most legendary authors of all time. You may know about the classics The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, and Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Did you know he wrote all of these while living in Hartford?
From September 1874 until financial issues forced a move to Europe, Samuel Clemens lived in this house with his wife, Olivia, and his three daughters, Olivia, Clara, and Jane. He always said his family's years in the Hartford House were the most productive and the happiest of his life.
This gorgeous historical three-floor landmark spans 11,500 square feet and boasts 25 rooms, including a drawing room, a school room, a billiard room, a library, and a conservatory. The exquisite artistry of the interior design of the home was created by Louis C. Tiffany and Company, Artist Associates.
Named as one of the 10 Best Historic Homes in the World by National Geographic, tours are available only by reservation. Knowledgeable living history guides give you a glimpse into the life and the times of the Clemens family. Learn interesting stories of history and humor from the viewpoint of servants, family, and groundskeepers.
The museum keeps Mark Twain's legacy alive by expanding its education opportunities for both students and writers. Virtual tours, classes, and workshops are available. Authors also have the opportunity to win the Mark Twain Voice in Literature Award.
