We always look forward to long weekends, but there’s nothing worse than forgetting to plan ahead and scrambling to come up with something to do once it arrives, or – even worse – end up doing nothing at all and feeling like you’ve wasted the days. Luckily for us, there are tons of excellent destinations around Colorado that are fun and affordable. If you’re ready for an adventure that won’t break the bank, check out these seven inexpensive road trip destinations!
You know we couldn't have a list of the best Colorado road trip destinations without the Mile High City! Not only is there plenty to see and do around our capital city, but there are plenty of FREE things to do, ranging from parks to festivals to attractions like the Denver Mint!
I promise this article won't be listing all of the big cities (because you can obviously find cheap entertainment around cities), but the Springs deserve mentioning for its incredible surroundings, which include the Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, and Cheyenne Mountain. If the outdoors aren't your thing, Colorado Springs is also home to a historic downtown chock-full of shopping, restaurants, and other entertainment.

Manitou may be little, but it is fierce! Home to just over 5,000 people, Manitou Springs is located just up the road from Colorado Springs and is jam-packed with things to do for outdoorsy types (check out the Manitou Incline), history buffs (you'll love the Manitou Cliff Dwellings), and avid adventurers (Cave of the Winds, anyone?). Entrance to the iconic Cave of the Winds starts at just $15 for ages 6-12 and $21 for ages 13+.

Never heard of Mosca? Then you are missing out on one of Colorado's most incredible gems: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve! You might be surprised to see Aspen on this list, as it has a reputation for being an expensive destination; however, there is actually plenty to do here that doesn’t cost a ton of cash. For every pricey thing to do here, there is also something free or affordable. Some of our favorite cheap activities: exploring Maroon Bells, strolling through downtown, or stopping by for one of the many parades and special events that take place throughout the year.
Let's head east to Burlington; a historic railroad community that has so much offer. Don't miss the exciting Old Town Museum, the historic (and still operational) Kit Carson Carousel, and the numerous unique places to shop for antiques and enjoy home-cooked meals.
