There’s no denying that Arkansas is filled with precious gemstones. In fact, we have the only public diamond mine in the country. While diamonds are my best friend, I love crystals as well. And luckily, we also have lots of crystal mines right here in our backyard. Many of these are tucked away inside the Ouachita Mountains, especially in the small town of Mount Ida. Known as the quartz crystal capital of the world, Mount Ida is a haven for my fellow crystal lovers. Let’s explore the quartz crystal capital of Arkansas and see what other hidden gems it has to offer.
At first glance, Mount Ida, Arkansas looks like the quintessential small town.
It has a population of less than 1,000 residents along with a quaint downtown lined with local shops and restaurants.
But what most folks might not know is that the charming town is the crystal quartz capital of the world, making it a hidden gem destination that is worth exploring.
The town is brimming with gemstones, and the best part is you’ll have ample opportunities to dig for them. Avant Mining Fisher Mountain Rock Shop and Public Dig is one of the well-known dig sites for Arkansas crystal mining in town.
A visit to Wegner Quartz Crystal Mines, another digging site, is almost certain to yield great rewards. So, if you love crystals and Arkansas crystal mining, this is the place for you.
While the privately run mining companies are great, you can easily hike the Crystal Vista trail and dig for gemstones for free.
The hike might be a bit challenging, but the rewards are certainly worth the trek.
But if you don't want to get dirty and mine your own gems, just head on over to Fiddler's Ridge Rock Shop and purchase as many crystals as your heart desires.
Crystals are also sold at the digging sites, but in my opinion, digging for your own precious stones is the best part of the adventure.
Aside from being the quartz crystal capital of Arkansas and the world, Mount Ida has a lot more to offer.
Tucked along the scenic Lake Ouachita, the town is blessed with spectacular views. The Hickory Nut Mountain Vista Overlook is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike.
If you're searching for some outdoor adventure, there are hiking and biking trails throughout the area.
All of which feature incredible vistas as well as various landscapes, which makes this town a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast.
Moreover, with its proximity to Lake Ouachita, Mount Ida is a haven for water adventurers. So, if you love spending time paddling, floating, swimming, and more, the town would be a perfect getaway for you.
You'll want to check out nearby Ouachita Kayak Tours, to plan a day of water excursions.
Of course, all our small towns have hidden gem restaurants that are a must-visit. Dairyette has been a local staple in Mount Ida for over 60 years, and folks can't get enough of the delicious eats.
Be sure to grab a mouthwatering burger or milkshake when you visit, you won't be disappointed.
While gemstones are Mount Ida's biggest claim to fame, the town is also home to one of the best resorts in Arkansas.
Mountain Harbor Resort and Spa features gorgeous cabins tucked along the scenic lake.
Between the crystal mines as well as the great outdoor adventures, Mount Ida is truly a hidden gem. And you'll want to explore this quartz crystal capital of the world here in Arkansas for yourself.
