Arkansans may be spoiled with spectacular forests and mountain ranges, but being able to breathe in the salty air from rolling beach waves is one thing this state lacks. Fortunately, there are a few places that have created the reinvigorating feeling felt from the ocean air. Dubbed "salt caves," these darkened rooms are covered in salt and are anecdotally known to ease respiratory issues. The Salt Room, housed in the Lowell Therapeutic Massage Center, has aimed to revitalize clients using this salty remedy known as Halotherapy. You’ll be ready to dig your toes into the sand (or salt, rather) as we tour Arkansas’ only authentic pink Himalayan salt room.
This ordinary plaza building contains a dazzling creation. Let’s step inside.
Who knew two chairs and some salt could create something so spectacular? Being surrounded by, and breathing in the particles is said to have a healing effect on respiratory systems.
You’re looking at five TONS of chiseled salt…
…and 517 salt bricks.
The 27 salt lamps give the room its soft glow. It’s impossible to not be totally relaxed after a standard 45 minute session.
The lamps range from a little over 5lbs…
…to 225lbs of salty goodness.
Although Arkansas does have other salt rooms, this is the only one to use pink Himalayan salt. Straight from Khewra Salt Mine in Punjab, Pakistan, the pink salt is known as being the most pollutant free salt available.
Halotherapy isn’t a new fad. It’s been documented all the way back to ancient Greece! In addition to respiratory issues like asthma, salt therapy has been known to also significantly improve chronic headaches and eczema.
If you’re unable to remodel your extra bedroom into a salt cave, no worries! You can still take home a salty souvenir. According to their page, salt lamps emit negative ions which bind to positive ions found in electronics. This purifies the air and the additional negative ions are believed to help increase serotonin.
You may take it with a grain of salt now, but this is one experience you won’t want to miss. Discover a new way to relax at 320 N. Bloomington Suite F-1 in Lowell.
