Between the pandemic and wildfires, Kitt Peak Astronomical Observatory in Arizona had shut its doors to the public. Well, that's now changing. After nearly three long years, the observatory is opening its doors to visitors again and you'll want to add it to your Arizona bucket list. Whether you enjoy star gazing or learning about astronomy, this world-class observatory is a must-visit destination.
Kitt Peak National Observatory was founded in 1958 in southern Arizona. It's home to numerous telescopes that have aided in discoveries of the Universe.
Before the pandemic in 2020, the observatory welcomed visitors from around our country and the world. However, like many places during that time, it closed to the public.
Once the pandemic restrictions lifted and places were allowing visitors once again, there was a wildfire that caused Kitt Peak to remain closed to the public. This wildfire raged between June and July of 2022.
Luckily, the observatory was not damaged although the road leading to it was and, therefore, it became too dangerous to allow visitors. Now that the road is repaired, people can return and learn about the discoveries made at this world-famous observatory!
You can visit Kitt Peak National Observatory Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays and tickets cost $20 per person. This is a great opportunity to learn a bit about astronomy and check out several of the remarkable telescopes the observatory uses.
