A tragedy may have incinerated its physical structure, but nothing can destroy over a century’s worth of memories. From Pancho Villa on horseback to miners who passed through for work, you’ll meet specters of all kinds here at the Gadsden Hotel in Douglas.
First opened in 1907, the Gadsden was destroyed by a fire just 20 years later. It was rebuilt in the very same location, essentially guaranteeing a future of paranormal activity.
Many famous faces, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Charlie Sheen, have walked these halls. The hotel also served as a meeting place for cattlemen, miners, and businessmen - even Pancho Villa was once a guest!
From these white marble steps down to the labyrinth-like basement, spirits have been spotted around every corner. Every claim reported by a guest is filed behind the front desk, so ask the concierge for a look during your next stay.
Room 333 is supposedly the hotel's most haunted spot, so check in at your own risk. Paranormal accounts range from TVs turning off and on by themselves to mysterious, disembodied knocks on the walls.
Grab a seat at the saloon and strike up a conversation with the person next to you, but don't be surprised if they vanish when you look away. Patrons often make friends with specters simply trying to enjoy a former vice.
At the coffee shop, expect to hear spoons clanging against mugs and maybe even some casual chatter from empty tables. To be fair, it’s a comforting thought to know coffee can still be enjoyed in the afterlife!
