Why Is The Dalton Highway So Dangerous?

Where is the James Dalton highway in Alaska?

The James W. Dalton Highway is a long, 414-mile trek that goes right up through the state. It begins north of Fairbanks, on the Elliott Highway, and extends all the way to Deadhorse, which is a small unincorporated community on the banks of the Arctic Ocean. It’s an old supply road known for its dangerous conditions; it was featured on the first episode of BBC’s World’s Most Dangerous Roads. Only bits and pieces of it are paved – just 109 miles worth. It’s the northernmost highway in Alaska, and it’s responsible for numerous deaths every year, as its incredibly isolated nature makes it difficult for first responders to get to accident scenes in time. It’s icy, it’s remote, and yet there's an intriguing beauty to it.

What are some scary places in Alaska?

Alaska’s highly isolated location lends to the fact that there are some places in the state that are downright scary. Crime rates are among the highest in the United States, and it’s considered one of the deadliest states for women. The most dangerous towns include Kenai, Anchorage, and Fairbanks, and Kenai ranks #1 for the most property crimes in the state. The murder rate is also frighteningly high, but don’t let these statistics deter you from coming to visit. There are plenty of safe places in Alaska, too! For example, these scenic drives are easily among some of the most beautiful in the world.

What are the most scenic drives in Alaska?

Now, this is an unfair question! Alaska is a breathtakingly beautiful state, and as a result, most of the highways and byways are awe-inspiring. Some of the most famous include the Steese Highway, where should you drive it at the right time of year (Summer Solstice), you’ll be able to see the incredible “midnight sun” phenomena. The Copper River Highway is incredibly beautiful, and we also really love both portions of the Sterling Highway. You’ll definitely want to make sure you bring a camera (or twelve); these roads are picture-perfect in every sense.
