As the seasons change, it’s tempting to get out of the house and enjoy our state as it slows down and readies itself for winter! An autumn road trip is the best way to get out and take in the beautiful colors of Alaska before we bundle up. Take any portion of the Glenn Highway and enjoy the fantastic display of fall colors!
During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.
As the high tempo of summer begins to slow down, weekends in Alaska are filled with campfires, flannel, and time with friends and family!
It's the perfect time to hit the road as there's less summer traffic and you have a great chance of seeing wildlife as they finish stocking up for the long winter ahead. And of course, you'll have the amazing display of fall colors!
The Glenn Highway is a great highway to take that autumn road trip on.
Spanning all the way from Anchorage to the Tok Cutoff, this highway is 378 miles of pure magic. You'll drive alongside some of the most picturesque mountains in the state!
After you exit Palmer and reach Sutton, you'll drive alongside the Matanuska River for a while.
Following the river affords you some absolutely stunning views, and you'll drive right next to it until you head out of the valley and climb into the mountains of Glacier View.
You'll pass by Matanuska Glacier during your road trip, and there's a great spot to pull over and take photos from.
Besides the glacier, you'll pass by famous mountains like Gunsight Mountain, Lion's Head, and Mt. Drum. The sights during this road trip are arguably some of the most beautiful in the world!
Watching winter come down the mountains is an incredible experience.
The Glenn Highway has a lot of aspen and birch forest along the side, which gives you those incredible pops of yellow and orange colors. Plants like low-bush cranberries and lichen give the mountains a red hue as they die off in anticipation of winter.
You'll also top out at almost 3,332 feet when you pass through Eureka Summit!
There's a great spot to grab a bite to eat at Eureka Lodge. Warm up with their .25 cent coffee and a big burger before heading back onto the highway!
This highway is perfect for a road trip whenever you're feeling the desire to get out and see some of the best facets of Alaska!
Although it's beautiful every season, autumn brings something special to this highway. Even just an hour's drive can pull you away from your busy day-to-day life and allow you to relax!
