Spend the night at the Monte Sano Lodge, and for more of a connection to the great outdoors, stay in one of the 14 historic cabins, 11 of which were built by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Or pitch a tent in one of the 89 improved campsites.
• Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve (Tuscumbia): This unique property covering approximately 700 acres, offers dramatic waterfalls, hiking trails, diverse wildlife, and history. One way to appreciate this land is to hike the moderately challenging trail that descends to the main Cane Creek Canyon. It's about 350 feet from the top of the ridge to the creek level on an 8.2-mile loop trail, featuring pioneer cabin sites, scenic canyon overlooks, and lovely wildflower patches in the spring. The preserve is open year-round, Fridays through Sundays.
• GoFAR USA Park (Decutar): Experience outdoor recreation in brave and inventive ways, including zip lines, natural playscapes, and an adult obstacle course. Have you ever played paintball? You can do that here too, along with an RC basher and scooter pump course. Take a hike or ride your mountain bikes on the wooded hiking trails and compete in the seasonal races. And for a gentler activity at this 60-acre park, give the furry ones some love at the petting zoo.
