What better way to enjoy the outdoors with the entire family than to visit some of Delaware’s most amazing nature centers? With forests, marshes, beaches, and many other natural attractions, Delaware is the perfect place to explore and discover what awaits in the state’s native habitats. Visit these three nature centers to not only learn more about the state’s fascinating plants and animals but to have loads of good times, too!
It’s fun and easy to spend an entire day soaking up the outdoors in exciting ways at Lums Pond State Park located in Bear, Delaware. Spend time learning about Delaware’s native wildlife species and spot live reptiles and aquatic life inside the nature center, open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Please check their website for up-to-date visitor’s information including entrance fee. When you’re ready, step outside of the center to find an array of activities! Head to the children’s playground, sign up for a kayak tour or go ziplining. There’s so much to do here, including hiking a 6.4-mile trail that offers amazing views of Delaware’s largest millpond! When the water beckons on a hot day, jump into a kayak, canoe, or pedalboat to spot Great Blue Herons and other animals. Visit Lums Pond Nature Center at this awesome Delaware state park.
Located in the beautiful Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware, the Seaside Nature Center takes full advantage of its access to the Atlantic Ocean. Pack up the family and head to this awe-inspiring nature center which is open daily (except for Mondays and Tuesdays). As always, please check their website for current visitor information. There is a small entrance fee as well. Make the trip and you’ll see a massive 300-gallon two-level touch tank, as well as five 1,000-gallon tanks displaying the area’s most amazing sea creatures. There’s also a gift shop. Outside the nature center, a scenic overlook complete with lighthouses, a fishing pier, trails, and even a historic WWII area await your further exploration!
History buffs rejoice as you enter the Chambers House Nature Center. Nestled in the White Clay Creek State Park, this historic house was built in 1820 and once served as an office. Here, volunteers and staff provide educational materials and various enjoyable programs throughout the year, like their Junior Naturalist Program or the White Clay Creek Fest where kids of all ages can enjoy live music, food, and entertainment geared towards Delaware wildlife enthusiasts. Hiking the creek trail is a must for the entire family. There’s plenty more to do at the White Clay Creek State Park as well!
