Do you feel hints of autumn in the air? Fear not — there’s still plenty of time to enjoy hiking season here in Washington! In fact, depending on where you go, late August to mid-September is actually the best time to hike. Just head to the Central Cascades in Washington and find the Barclay Lake Trail, and you’ll see what we mean.

To find the beautiful Barclay Lake Trail, head east on US-2 from Monroe to the town of Baring.

Near milepost 41, take a left onto 635th Place NE. That road will eventually become FR-6024, and in about four miles, you'll reach the trailhead.
The trail is about 4.3 miles in total, and it's considered a fairly easy hike for all skill levels.

And while you can access the trail for most of the year, late summer and early fall have proven to be the best (and most scenic) times to go.
The trek takes you along the path of Barclay Creek, which is tucked into a narrow valley between Gunn and Merchant Peaks.

This area has long recovered from clear-cut status, so it's nice and forested. You'll spot Douglas firs, western hemlocks, and red cedars along the way.

This is a popular hike, so you may have to share your journey with others -- but the trail is rarely crowded.
