Most of us who’ve dug into the disturbing history of Michigan’s most haunted places are well aware of the story behind the Traverse City State Hospital. It was constructed in 1885 and remained open in some capacity for more than 100 years. There, the mentally unstable, those suffering with tuberculosis, typhoid, diphtheria, and polio all sought treatment and it’s said that the tormented souls of these patients continue to haunt the underground tunnels and caged balconies of the grounds.

What’s less talked about is outside of the asylum’s main walls – a portal to Hell under the so-called Hippy Tree. And not far from there, a simple house that no doubt has been afflicted by this sight of the damned. Naturally, some curious Michigan adventurers – cameras in hand – took to the asylum’s grounds and specifically into this house to catch a glimpse at some of the Mitten’s haunted past.

Take a look.

This seriously gave us the creeps. How about you? And tell us, where are some of Michigan’s spookiest places that give you nightmares?
