Not just in Mississippi, the buck moth caterpillar can be found from Texas to Florida and throughout the east coast.

Most stings are caused by someone accidentally sitting on a buck moth caterpillar. However, even the slightest touch from a buck moth caterpillar, such as being grazed by one falling from a tree, can result in a sting.

So, what can you do to avoid the buck moth caterpillar? Experts recommend being observant, especially when near oak trees, since that’s what the caterpillars feed on.
