Tornadoes. You really can’t live in Indiana without spending at least one night in your bathtub or basement listening to the storm warning system sirens going off. Dealing with tornadoes is just part of the territory for Hoosiers. Over the years, we’ve had some pretty devastating tornadoes tear through the state of Indiana. Some of us believe these tornadoes just made our state stronger. Here are seven of the most horrific outbreaks to impact Indiana.
The Great Tri-State Tornado is recognized as the deadliest tornado to have ever torn through the United States. This tornado killed nearly 700 people. This means it had twice as many fatalities as the second deadliest tornado in the United States. The tornado completely demolished Griffin, Indiana. It also destroyed half of Princeton. Nearly 100 people were killed just in Indiana.
From April 11 to April 12 in 1965 the second Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak plagued the United States. There were a total of 47 tornadoes and 21 of them were considered to be killers. This particular outbreak has been recorded as the deadliest tornado outbreak to plague Indiana with nearly 150 fatalities.
This outbreak of twisters stated on June 2nd 1980. It produced intense tornadoes in Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. A tornado struck the east side of the city, killed someone in Crawfordsville, and moved on to other states on the next day.
An F3 tornado was produced during the Evansville Tornado of November 2005. The tornado formed very early in the morning just outside of the city of Evansville. This was the first of several tornadoes to hit Indiana during the month of November. This tornado killed 25 people and become the most deadliest and destructive tornado to hit Indiana during the month of November.
There were a total of 49 tornadoes which touched down during this outbreak. This was actually the third outbreak of devastating tornados to impact Indiana during November 2005.
The state of Indiana was plagued with three tornado outbreaks during the month of November in 2005. This third outbreak was the less damaging and devastating, but there were still a few fatalities.
There were at least 64 confirmed tornadoes reported during this outbreak. Until the year 2010, this was the largest tornado outbreak to plague the United States during the month of October. Indiana was one of many states damaged by this outbreak.
