If most people were asked to name various cities throughout Hawaii, they would most likely give the same answer: Honolulu, Kailua-Kona, Lahaina, Lihue, or for anyone who is less familiar with the islands, Waikiki. While these destinations are undoubtedly great, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some fantastic cities and towns that are off the beaten path and often overlooked for their more popular neighbors. This funky little town, in particular, is one of Hawaii’s greatest gems, and we can’t wait to show you around.
Welcome to Kapa’a, a charming small town nestled along Kauai’s eastern shore with a population of just more than 10,000.
Recognized as one of America’s prettiest towns by Forbes, this small town is home to plenty of charm and Aloha spirit as well as hotels, vacation rentals, shopping, restaurants, and outdoor activities.
For some reason, this area is often overlooked by tourists and we can’t really figure out a good explanation as to why.
This Hemingway-themed restaurant filled with art is known for serving up the best quiches, cakes, and specialty coffee around. Order an espresso and crepes — your taste buds will thank you.
Visit Kiko for upcycled goods, locally made products, and artwork from Hawaii-based artisans, and Kamoa Ukulele Company if you’re interested in learning how to play this Hawaiian instrument. Kapa’a is also home to a bevy of antique shops if that’s your thing.
If you prefer hiking to shopping, Kauai’s Sleeping Giant is found just a few miles south of town and provides not only a killer workout but unforgettable views as well.
Beginning on the east side of the mountain that is commonly referred to as sleeping giant, the Nounou Trail leads 1,200 feet up Nounou Mountain through a forested area, with panoramic views from the summit, which is the chest of the mythical "sleeping giant."
Did you work up an appetite shopping, hiking, or both? Head to the stunning and rustic Street Burger for an ono meal.
Made with Makaweli Beef and served with truffle fries dipped in homemade ketchup, Street Burger is one of the best. Their outdoor patio pairs perfectly with a craft brew.
Located at the Kauai Coast Resort, Hukilau Lanai is open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner. Handcrafted dishes — like poke nachos, sweet potato ravioli, and macadamia nut chicken — are made using products from Kauai and the neighbor islands as much as possible.
Did we mention that the sunsets over Kapa’a are truly second to none? There’s simply no better way to end a day spent exploring this funky little town.
