A Trip To This Charming, Working Mill In Indiana Is Unforgettable

Head down to Salem, Indiana for a peek at this historic grist mill. It was built all the way back in 1808 just one year after John Hunt Morgan demanded ransom to spare every mill in the county from being set aflame.

Back in the day, the mill ran 24 hours a day using a combination of turbine and waterwheel power to grind corn. It operated steadily until 1914 when more modern mills outpaced the old grist mill. Out of the 65 mills that once operated in the county, it is the only one still standing.

Beck’s Mill was restored in 2007 and now welcomes visitors. You can stop by and learn all about how this mill supplied the community with valuable corn. Visitors can even pick up a package of ground corn to take home with them. There’s also an old general store and museum housed in the historic Beck’s Hill store right next door, so stop in for something tasty to eat.

If you want to enjoy the outdoors, wander around the mill’s many trails or sit and relax outside by the mill waterfall. There are picnic tables and plenty of seating for everyone.
