Located in Jefferson County is the abandoned Mount Vernon, Colorado; a now-ghost town that was a bustling community during the historic Gold Rush years. Once a contender for the Colorado state capital, the town’s population greatly declined when nearby ores dried up, with the population consisting of only one family by 1885. Today, the only remains of the town is the Mount Vernon Cemetery, which is thought to date back as early as 1860. To add to this heartbreaking story of prosperity lost, the cemetery is home to a mere 6 graves (4 of which are unmarked and unknown) surrounded by an old wooden fence.

As per Colorado Cemeteries, access to the abandoned Mount Vernon Cemetery can be found by going “to the Red Rocks/Morrison exit off of I-70, (the intersection of highway 40 and I-70). From the parking lot, take the Villiage Walk to the top of the hill (about 0.3 miles). The cemetery is on the right side (west) of the path.”
