21 Things No One Tells You About Surviving A Vermont Winter
Welcome to Vermont! Think you're ready for a real winter in VT? Think again. Here are a few things you may not know what to expect. Sure, we have just a dusting at the moment and you're a pro, but you really have no idea what you're in for. But just wait and we promise... It's going to be awesome!
1. If you think you're totally ready for winter... You're not.
Overconfidence can be a dangerous thing in the Green Mountain State.
2. It may still be fall...
But Mother Nature makes her own calendar.
3. People love to talk about the weather.
So if you plan to be social, you've got to add your two cents.
4. Get ready for the great debate: Which winter was the worst?
Everyone has an opinion, and we stand by it.
5. Get a winter sport.
As the saying goes, if you can't beat 'em... Join 'em!
6. Winter lasts for half the year.
There may be four seasons, but no one said they were divided evenly!
7. Be aware that it starts to get dark early.
Like, really early!
8. Just assume no one else has ever driven in the snow before.
It's just a lot easier that way.
9. All season tires are great...
During the summer.
10. The snow doesn't shovel itself.

11. In a pinch, kitty litter can be used on the ice.
It gives you that extra traction that could be the difference between standing and paralyzed.

No matter how many precautions we take, everyone falls prey to a cold at some point.
13. Be prepared to drive really slowly on the highway.
Better safe than sorry so plan your trip accordingly.
14. Be like a Boy Scout and always be prepared.
Have some supplies handy at all times. You never know what you, or someone else, may need.
15. Factor in an extra 15 minutes to your daily commute to deal with the ice on the windshield.
Invest in a good ice scraper. It will soon become your best friend.
16. Take off your shoes when you come in the house.
Otherwise you'll be tracking dirty puddles throughout.
17. Don't expect school to be cancelled.
Ever.
18. Dress in layers.
There are actually varying degrees of cold here. Dress wisely and be ready to adapt.
19. Find ways to use all this snow to your advantage.
Look at this! A new, free refrigerator!
20. Be sure to get extra supplies before a storm.
And get them early before they sell out!
21. It may be cold, but it sure is pretty.
