10 Troubling Facts About Kansas You Would Be Better Off Not Knowing

Kansas faces several social and economic challenges, including high unemployment rates in cities, low graduation rates, and a high obesity rate.

We all know just how great of a state Kansas is, but sometimes statistics prove we aren't perfect. The first step to fixing a problem is acknowledging you have one, right? Well, here are 10 troubling facts about Kansas that we're working on, or will soon. Let's hope these improve soon!

1. We don't require sex education in schools. If we do have education for sex/HIV, it doesn't have to be medically accurate.

Which is ridiculous. You'd think we would value our education, but with recent budget cuts to public schools across the state, you know that's not true at a state level.

2. Kansas has a 4.2 perfect unemployment rate, but bigger cities like Wichita have around 6 percent.

Six percent of 340,000 people is a lot. That comes out to 20,400 people and that's insane to think about.

3. We rank #6 on the "most moved FROM state" list.

Fifty-five percent of all moves in Kansas were to leave the state in 2015.

4. Only 89 percent of kids graduate from high school. That's 15th in the U.S.

We're somewhere in the middle between best and worst educated.

5. Kansas ranks 46th in economy.

Yikes.

6. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Kansas.

It's a real problem, and we should pay more attention to the people around us. Just give them the number 1-800-273-8255, and you could save a life.

7. Approximately 13.6 percent of Kansans live below the poverty line.

Many Kansans are struggling for the first time in years, and others who have been struggling for a long time have yet to see a break.

8. We also rank 7th in obesity. That's 30-34.9 percent of Kansans who are considered obese.

It may be due to our favorite restaurants, and love of starchy foods and red meat.

9. We rank 33rd in teen birth rate, with 1 being the lowest.

Teen pregnancy isn't a bad thing alone, but many of them aren't planned, which is the bad part.

10. Wichita is also 2nd in "worst places to date."

Probably because young people don't have much to do besides go to clubs and concerts.

Afterwords, take a look at some of the things that make Kansas our favorite state.
