Eufaula, Alabama, is renowned for its annual Eufaula Pilgrimage, showcasing historic homes and local history.
It's no secret the South is well known for its historic homes. One Alabama town that features several historic homes is Eufaula. For information about the famous annual Eufaula Pilgrimage event that lets you tour the town's most beautiful historic homes, take a look below.
The charming town of Eufaula is located in Barbour County, Alabama.
Eufala is a wonderful small town and one of its most popular events is its annual Eufaula Pilgrimage. The event, which is a great way to learn about Alabama history, is the state's oldest tour of homes.
The Pilgrimage began in 1966 and has been going strong ever since.
Each spring, folks come from all over Alabama and further afield to get an up-close-and-personal view of these magnificent homes, as well as to enjoy some of what the town has to offer.
At least a dozen beautiful homes are featured during the Pilgrimage each year.
The Shorter Mansion (pictured above), is always featured, as it is one of the most historic homes in Alabama. Built in 1884, it is a wonderful example of the Classical Revival-style architecture prevalent in the state.
Another of the historic homes in Eufala, Alabama is Kendall Manor.
The construction of this historic home began in 1861. Due to the Civil War, all construction came to a standstill. Because of this, Kendall Manor wasn't completed until 1867. There is so much wonderful Alabama history that is learned on the tour!
The Shorter-Moore Home, built in the Tudor style, has been featured on the Pilgrimage.
As historic homes in Alabama go, it is one of the most beautiful. Like other homes on the tour, visitors are greeted by costumed docents who interpret the history of the home and city, providing more depth to the experience.
In addition to beautiful historic homes, period musicians are sometimes featured along the route.
If you're lucky, the timing of the Eufala Pilgrimage might also coincide with the annual PorchFest in town. Held at Carlton's Landing, it is a popular annual celebration of music, community, and the spring season.
Fendall Hall is another beautiful home that is often highlighted on the tour of Eufala historic homes.
A very unique aspect of the Eufala Pilgrimage is that, unlike most home tours, there are some homes that are highlighted during the day, others during evening Candlelight Tours. This allows you to see them in all their glory from different perspectives.
