There’s no doubt about it, Wyoming is a state made up of some pretty intriguing landscapes. In fact, this one otherworldly landscape in Wyoming looks as if it has been to hell and back. The bison that used to roam the area would definitely have felt that way, unfortunately. The history behind this devilish Wyoming landscape is quite interesting.
Hell's Half Acre is a geologic oddity that is located 40 miles west of Casper. It's located along the south side of US 20/26.
It was formed many, many years ago by the forces of the Powder River and wind driven erosion. This is the southwest view from the summit of Hell's Half Acre.

This unusual area is very much like a gorge. One that's 150 feet deep, horseshoe shaped and covers 320 acres.

It's made up of deep ravines, caves and rock formations. The ravine was once used by Native Americans to drive bison off the cliffs to their deaths. Flint arrowheads and bones have been found in the area.
This from-another-planet landscape also served another purpose. Hell's Half Acre was used as the unique setting for the alien bug planet, Klendathu, in the film, Starship Troopers.

Hell's Half Acre has been dubbed many names. It has been known as 'The Devil's Kitchen', 'The Pits of Hades' and 'The Baby Grand Canyon'. Most of these names are a reflection of the devilish landscape.
At one time, there was a restaurant and motel located on top of the ravine. Today, neither one exists. They were both closed in 2005 and have since been torn down.
There is no other area quite like this in Wyoming. Check out this highly unusual formation.

Pictured is one of the caves in the area. This would have made a great remote hideout for outlaws!
It should be noted that the area is fenced off and there is no public access. However, there is a very informative sign about the area.
Wyoming is like no other state with its intriguing landscapes.
