Over the past few weeks, Mississippi has experienced some unusually frigid temperatures. And while the cold weather has been a bit of a nuisance, it’s also caused a rare phenomenon – frost flowers.

The unusual flowers "bloom" when the temperature of the air is below freezing but the ground is above freezing and moist. Due to the cold temperatures, water and sap in the stem of the plant freezes, expands, and eventually, causes the stem to burst, resulting in ribbons of ice that look like flower petals.
