You probably believe that you’ve done all there is to do in Georgia. You’ve lived here for dozens of years, and there’s just nothing new. Right? Plus, with all of the tourists around, a trip to the World of Coke can become quite unbearable. Well, lucky for you there are some pretty awesome alternatives to the usual tourist traps around the state. Instead of going to the usual touristy places in Georgia, do these instead:
1. Don't go to the World of Coke ...
Sure the World of Coke is great, but it's been done so many times that it's pretty overrated. Sure coke is great, but there are so many other amazing museums to explore in Georgia.
Do go to the National Civil War Naval Museum - 1002 Victory Dr
Columbus, GA 31901
The National Civil War Naval Museum is a free museum in Columbus, and it's just a wealth of knowledge. This non-profit museum tells the not-often-heard story of the Civil War Navies. It's a huge 40,000 sq. ft. museum that features two original American Civil War Military vessels.
2. Don't go the Georgia Aquarium ...
Yes the Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the world, but if you want to get an up close and personal view of nature in Georgia, you have to visit the largest blackwater swamp in North America.
Do go to the Okefenokee Swamp Park - 5700 Okefenokee Swamp Park Rd
Waycross, GA 31501
The Okefenokee Swamp is located in Waycross, GA, and is nothing short of amazing! There are more than 700 miles of swamp to explore and more than 600 different species of animals to see.
3. Don't go to a Falcons Game
Yes of course, if you're visiting Georgia, you want to go to a Falcons game. However, if you go to a collegiate football game you'll have 10x more fun!
Do go to a UGA game
In my honest opinion, collegiate sports are better than professional sports because it just feels more real! The players are not motivated by money and they are truly playing for the love of the game. Plus the energy felt at these games is unrivaled!
4. Don't go to some fancy restaurant in Atlanta
BORING! If you're in Georgia, you need to try out southern cuisine. It's not everyday you get to experience the taste of authentic southern cooking.
Do go to Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room - 107 W Jones St
Savannah, GA 31401
Go to one of the best southern food restaurants in the south and enjoy a home cooked meal. I promise you won't regret it!
5. Don't go to Six Flags Over Georgia
This amusement park is not as fun as it used to be. The rides are often broken down, and it's really crowded.
Do go to Wild Adventures - 3766 Old Clyattville Rd
Valdosta, GA 31601
This place is a water park, an amusement park and a zoo all wrapped up in one! They truly have entertainment for everyone.
6. Don't go to Skyview Atlanta
In my opinion, the ride is too short and the cost is too high..
Do go to the Georgia National Fair - Every fall in Perry, GA
The Georgia National Fair is a much better venue to attend if you want more fun per buck!
7. Don't go to the Atlanta History Museum
While museums are a nice and convenient way to experience history, there's a much better way to learn about our history in Georgia.
Do witness the history of Savannah, Georgia!
Walk around in Savannah, and observe buildings that are hundreds of years old with stories that are just as old. It's amazing the amount of historical preservation found in this wonderful city. You will learn much more about our state in Savannah than you will in a museum.
