Arizona always somehow seems to manage to look a little more gorgeous than usual when the fall season has started to settle in. The trees and their leaves begin to warm into tones of yellow, orange, and (eventually) red. If you’re looking for a scenic drive that will take you into some of Arizona’s more rural areas to see the colors of fall, take notes because we’re going to show you a few routes to consider if you think 89A will be too crowded for you. Due to the secluded and often rough nature of these roads, you may want to consider driving a high clearance vehicle. Here are our picks for the best scenic drives in Arizona for the fall season:

Best Scenic Drives In Arizona

Where are the most notably beautiful places in Arizona?

Honestly, how are we supposed to choose just a few? Arizona is easily one of the most beautiful states in the nation, and there’s so much to see that it’s impossible to explore everything in just a weekend, a week, or even a few months. We would recommend you begin somewhere beautiful like the town of Flagstaff, which is surrounded by breathtaking ponderosa pine forest, and from there, you should take the 89A south to Sedona. That’s one of the top ten most beautiful drives in the country and has been named as such more than once. The Grand Canyon is beautiful, but we recommend a trip to Havasupai for the best experience. If you’d rather go down south, Saguaro National Forest near Tucson is a uniquely beautiful paradise that you can’t miss.

What is fall in Arizona like?

In a few words? Tough to predict! Some years, fall seems to get started a lot earlier than others. Other years, it seems like summer lasts forever and fall is just a fleeting time before it starts to get chilly. In many areas of the state, particularly the most mountainous areas like northern Arizona, eastern Arizona, and even some of the peaks of southern Arizona, the fall color is beautiful, but it gets a later start due to higher temperatures during the late summer. You can expect to see fall color beginning in the middle of October, though the beginning of November is our favorite time to go leaf-peeping. Temperatures are mild during the day and chilly at night, and oftentimes we’ll get beautiful fall rainstorms.

What are the best country roads in Arizona for a road trip?

Arizona is chock-full of delightful scenic roads just perfect for a day trip (or longer). Some of our favorite roads include the breathtaking AZ 89A from Prescott all the way through to Flagstaff. You’ll pass through mountains, canyons, and beautiful Oak Creek, and the views are second to none for literally the whole route. We’re also fans of the drive from Phoenix to Payson, as you pass through more mountains as well as absolutely beautiful desert scenery as well. Need more ideas? Let this article be your guide.
