This river in Wyoming is just as wild and free as the rest of the scenic landscape in the state. There’s absolutely nothing holding this one river back from coursing through the state on its own terms. In fact, this untamed river in Wyoming is the only one like it in the contiguous United States.
Yellowstone River flows for 692 miles through the states of Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. This amazing river is a tributary of the Missouri River.
The Yellowstone River is formed near Younts Peak in the Absaroka Range in northwestern Wyoming. It's formed from two streams that rise along the northern and southern ridges of the pictured peak. These two streams join at the base of the western ridge.

The really unique thing about Yellowstone River is that it's the only undammed river in the Lower 48. There's nothing holding it back. The lack of dams along the river creates an excellent habitat for trout. In fact, it's one of the best trout streams in the world.

The river feeds into and drains out of Yellowstone Lake. Yellowstone Lake is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park.

This free flowing river weaves northward through Yellowstone National Park. Here it is snaking through Hayden Valley.
After it leaves Hayden Valley, the river plunges over Upper Yellowstone Falls. The water here plunges downward 109'.
After flowing a quarter mile downstream, the water then plunges over Lower Yellowstone Falls. Lower Yellowstone Falls is the largest volume waterfall in the Rocky Mountains. The falls plunge 308' which is twice as high as Niagara Falls.
The river then flows through the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The canyon is 24 miles long, around 1000' deep and 1/2 mile wide.

Yellowstone then leaves the state of Wyoming and flows into Montana. This temperamental river leaves its magic wherever it flows.
