The One Extraordinary Hike Under 5 Miles Everyone In Wyoming Should Take
In a state with hundreds of impressive trails, it’s no easy task to single out just one. But the truth is, not everyone has the time or skill set to tackle some of the multi-day treks through mountainous terrain. That’s where the hikes under 5 miles seem particularly appealing.
Uncle Tom’s Trail in Yellowstone is a popular trail for hikers of all skill level, mostly because of its extraordinary views of one of the parks most fascinating features: The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. This trail is actually less than 1 mile roundtrip, but don’t let that fool you. You’ll experience some of the most incredible views the park has to offer.
Many people might not realize that Uncle Tom’s Trail has been around for over 100 years. The trail is named for H.F. “Uncle Tom” Richardson, who built a trail down into Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon. In the 1890s, he was given permission to lead ferry tours across the Yellowstone River and down to the base of Lower Falls. At that point, guests could enjoy a pre-packed picnic before heading up again.
These trips were for brave individuals who weren’t afraid of relying on ropes and rope ladders to tackle the canyon’s steep walls. Uncle Tom’s trips lasted nearly seven years, until a bridge was built by the National Parks System that greatly increased ease of passage.
Today, hikers will climb nearly 330 steps to descend downwards into the canyon to the base of Lower Falls. This breathtaking waterfall measures over 300-feet in length and creates quite a spectacle. On most days, you’ll be able to see a rainbow created as sunlight seeps through this water’s mist.
While this hike is certainly not easy, there are many benches and resting points available so that the 500 vertical-foot ascent/descent does not have to be too strenuous.
You’ll want to watch your step, but also be sure to stop and admire the view as often as you can. The ability to hike down into the canyon is truly spectacular, especially when you know how much work and history went into the trail’s creation.
