The town was originally named in honor of Major General John Buford who was a Union cavalry officer during the Civil War. The town was put up for auction in 2012 and was sold to a Vietnamese business man, Pham Dinh Nguyen, for $900,000. He renamed the town 'PhinDeli Town Buford' after a coffee brand imported from Vietnam that is sold in the convenience store.

The town was founded in 1866 due to the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Believe it or not, the town at one time had a population of 2,000.

Don Sammons purchased the town in 1992 after moving there with his wife and son in 1980. After his wife died and son moved away, he was the one and only resident. The town was put up for sale after he decided to move closer to his son.
