Cascade Creek Trail Is A Beginner-Friendly Waterfall Trail In Wyoming That's Great For A Family Hike

Wyoming’s famous waterfalls, like the Upper and Lower Falls, Hidden Falls, and Fairy Falls, can each make for exciting and beautiful hikes. If you’ve done the ‘typical’ waterfall hikes and you’re looking for something new, check out Terraced Falls. It’s considered a secret waterfall in Wyoming thanks to its remote location, and this lightly trafficked and easy trail is great for families or beginner hikers.
Terraced Falls can be accessed via the 3.4-mile out-and-back Cascade Creek Trail.
Turn down the road by Flagg Ranch, between Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Keep an eye out for the sign that says “Cascade Creek” in order to find the trailhead.
Once you're on the trail, it quickly becomes Yellowstone National Park land. Even though it's backcountry, bee sure to follow the park's rules and regulations!
There's very little elevation gain on this hike, which makes it perfect for beginner hikers or families. Along the way, you'll catch views of the aptly named Cascade Creek tumbling along.
The best view of Terraced Falls comes from a rocky overlook just before the trail ends. Take your time - this is one trek that's truly about the journey, rather than the end destination.
This beautiful waterfall is 130 feet high, and is where Cascade Creek drops down into the Fall River. Honestly, the naming of these two points could not be more appropriate.
Because this is Yellowstone backcountry, you'll want to carry bear spray and hike in a group. There's always a chance you'll encounter some wildlife, so be respectful of the lands and keep aware of your surroundings.
The quiet, hidden hike along Cascade Creek to Terraced Falls makes many believe they've found their own secret waterfall in Wyoming. This is such a lightly trafficked trail that they might be right!
The Flagg Ranch road (which becomes Grassy Lake Road past the Ranch) can be rough, and is closed winters. It’s best to bring a 4×4 or high clearance vehicle in order to ensure an easier drive out to the falls.
