When we’re feeling extra snarky, we like to point out that Wisconsin actually have more lakes than our neighbor to the west that claims its 10,000 like it’s impressive or something. In actuality, Wisconsin’s abundance of lakes is one of the reasons that people originally settled here and one of our greatest assets. In Madison, the Frozen Assets Festival run by the Clean Lakes Alliance (coming up on February 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 2018) is a celebration of Wisconsin’s amazing lakes that takes almost entirely on frozen Lake Mendota.
This really is a one-of-a-kind festival. From pond hockey, ice fishing and more on the lake to demonstrations from University of Wisconsin scientists, this festival is both fun for all and an education about the importance of keeping our lakes clean.
Olympic gold medalist Casey FitzRandolph gives speed skating demonstrations. There are also curling demonstrations and trials, pond hockey, snowshoeing and figure skating performances.
The Clean Lakes Alliance found that many Wisconsinites have never been on a frozen lake before. So they do all the precautions and checking beforehand and then take over Lake Mendota, using The Edgewater Hotel as sort of home base.
One of the most unique, but also most awesome parts of Frozen Assets is how it combines learning about our lakes with fun out on frozen Lake Mendota. UW scientists host demonstrations and are on hand to discuss what is being done to keep our state clean.
There's a giant kite display you can walk among, sleigh rides, sled pulls, free s'mores and hot chocolate, snowshoeing, a slapshot competition with the Madison Capitols and so much more.
The festival is from 10 am to 5 pm each of the days it's open and it's such a unique and delightful way to celebrate winter, support clean lakes and see Madison from a whole new perspective.
