The Little-Known Rock Carvings In Wisconsin You Can Only Reach By Hiking This 5-Mile Trail
One of the most remote spots in Door County has a bit of mystery to it. Rock Island is a rocky island off the far tip of Door County and it’s one of the best places to hike in Wisconsin. It’s a state park, but it’s no ordinary state park. A visit to Rock Island requires a bit of an expedition, including two ferry rides. But it’s a wild and remarkable place and there are some mysterious rock carvings along the shore that can be reached via a hiking trail. Here’s what’s waiting for you on the island.
To reach Rock Island, drive to the very tip of Door County and take the car ferry to Washington Island. Then, drive to the east side of the island, park your car and take the passenger ferry to Rock Island.
On shore, there’s an impressive stone boathouse but otherwise there’s little development. The island has been preserved in a natural state and it’s gorgeous.
On the rocky shoreline on the south side of the island, a mystery awaits. You’ll find it, if you closely examine the limestone rocks that are just above the waves.
The story of the carvings is tied to the boathouse that you passed at the start of the hike. A wealthy inventor named Chester Thordarson once owned most of this island. He hired stoneworkers to create that incredible boat house in 1929, and apparently, some passed time by leaving something behind on the rocky beach.
The beachfront stone carvings are not far from the start of this hike. Continue the loop to see more of the island landscape and an incredible old lighthouse.
