This Is The Most Hippie Town In Wisconsin And You Need To Visit
There are, it turns out, quite a few towns and cities in Wisconsin that could earn this moniker. From Mineral Point’s artist colony to Eau Claire’s music scene to Viroqua’s organic, cooperative farming, there are plenty of spots that display characteristics that would lend themselves to being called hippie. Certainly parts of Madison fall in line, as well, but any town where the state is the largest employer kind of automatically can’t have the title, I think.
Spring Green is most known as the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, but there’s so much more to this small town on the Wisconsin River. Located about 40 miles west of Madison, Spring Green is full of artists and small, locally owned shops. It’s clear the same inspiration that fueled Wright has led to a new generation of people who find peace and comfort in the area.
Spring Green is a town of just 1,600 or so people. There's a quaint downtown and it just feels like quintessential small town living in the best possible way.
It makes sense that the same area that inspired Frank Lloyd Wright and begat the craziness that is The House on The Rock would also draw in other creative people and those who appreciate artistic and free thinking.
It's also the home of the American Players Theater, which puts on outdoor productions in the summer. All kinds of creative and artistic and free-thinking folks gather here.
This independent bookstore not only draws in an amazing list of authors, they do cookbook demonstrations and cook-throughs and have one of the best restaurants in the city. With a mind toward local sourcing and seasonality, it's a foodie dream.
The area is also a favorite spot for pilots. Picadilly Lily is a delicious little diner right on the airstrip and it draws in all kinds of nearby people.
Please note, Piccadilly Lilly Airport Diner has permanently closed.
Spring Green is the state's most hippie town because of its laid back attitude. It's a haven for thinkers, from writers and readers to artists and artisans.
It's a gorgeous small town with locals who take advantage of the location, using the bounty of the earth around them to not only nourish, but to inspire.
