When the seasons change in Wisconsin and the snow begins to shrink back in the forest, magic happens. Maple season arrives, and drip by drip, sweet goodness is collected by the state’s maple syrups producers. If you have the time and the trees, you can collect and cook down some of your own, but the next-best thing can be found at shops in northern Wisconsin. Maple Hollow has been producing some of the best maple syrup in Wisconsin, and it’s well worth a road trip. Here’s what you need to know about Maple Hollow.
Maple syrup production is an early spring tradition in Wisconsin. Each year, the Governor declares a four-week period from mid-March to mid-April "Maple Syrup Month."
You'll find maple trees and maple syrup producers all over the state, but some of the most oldest producers are located in northern Wisconsin. One of these businesses is located near the city of Merrill, an easy drive north of Wausau.
The syrup is made by inserting taps into sugar maple trees. The sap is collected and then boiled down to the correct density. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup.
The company's syrup house is located adjacent to the original site where "Grandpa Charles" made maple syrup long, long ago. In some regards, not much has changed and business sells a big variety of pure Wisconsin maple syrup, maple products, and maple syrup supplies.
