This Man Made Swimming Hole In Wisconsin Will Make You Feel Like A Kid On Summer Vacation
There was a time when this spot was good for one thing: mining rock. In the city of Verona, workers mined limestone for years before abandoning the operation. The quarry flooded with water, forming a lake that the state Department of Natural Resources now calls “Verona Gravel Pit.” Don’t let its name deter you — this swimming hole is a cool oasis worth seeking out when oppressive heat blankets south-central Wisconsin. It’s a great place that will have you feeling like a kid again. Here’s why a dip in this old quarry – also called Fireman’s Park Beach – is just what you need this summer in Wisconsin:
The quarry is a nine-acre lake located on the south side of Verona, just off Highway 151. It's just minutes from downtown Madison and it’s an easy drive from many places in south-central Wisconsin.
It’s worth the trip. The water at this little lake is often has the best conditions for swimming in the area. In the early summer, the little lake warms up faster than larger lakes. It also is often cleaner than other waters.
There’s also a huge splash pad that keeps kids cool on the hottest days, and a giant waterslide and diving board that offers plenty thrills. Lifeguards are on hand to help keep swimmers safe.
Up on dry land there’s also an expansive playground, concessions, changing rooms, a shelter, and several shade structures. Make plans to spend the day!
