6 Unexpected Wisconsin Island Escapes To Take This Summer
Folks outside of the Midwest tend to overlook the Great Lakes when thinking about beaches, sand, water sports and more, but we here in Wisconsin know that those two amazing lakes give us some of the most beautiful, natural spots in the whole state.
Even still, we don’t exactly think of ourselves as home to many island getaways – but maybe we should. Here are a few spots to escape the hustle and bustle of the mainland and switch over to a different pace of life.
Offering a peaceful retreat that feels a bit like a step back in time, this place offers all that you think of when it comes to the Northwoods with an understated elegance and a remote location you won't find anywhere else.
This little island is actually attached to the mainland by a small strip. Just barely removed, it sits in Superior Bay and is protected a bit by Minnesota's Park Point.
There are two little islands between the end of the Door County peninsula and Washington Island and Plum Island is the smaller one. Closed to the public until 2015, it is now a wonderful option for viewing wildlife. Along with Pilot and Hog Islands, Plum makes up the Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge. At 325 acres, Plum Island is by far the largest of the three islands and will be the only one open to the public.
There is a beautiful lighthouse on Pilot that makes for some gorgeous pictures, if you're in the area. Plum is first and foremost a wildlife refuge. Waterbirds such as double–crested cormorants, herons, great egrets and gulls are common residents. It's also home to deer, coyotes, several species of snakes, blue–spotted salamanders, spring peepers, frogs and other wildlife. In spring, there may be seasonal closures in certain areas on the island to protect nesting bald eagles.
The farthest west you can go in Wisconsin, this island is at the very edge of Door County. Accessible only by ferry from Washington , no vehicles are allowed on Rock Island.
This piece of paradise is not only amazing because of it's remote, untouched beauty. The boat house here is a stunning piece of architecture that would be home in many large cities. A trip here is truly unforgettable and something every Wisconsinite should do at least once.
Take the ferry, stay and enjoy all the quaint charm of this unique piece of Wisconsin. The gateway to the rest of the Apostle Islands, you'll have the trip of a lifetime here.
