Don’t Let Summer Pass Without Visiting These 5 Wisconsin Islands
When you hear the phrase island hopping, Wisconsin probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind… but don’t discount the Badger State so quickly. We have several great islands here in Wisconsin. From the well-known to the more elusive, here are five islands that are perfect for some summertime fun.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here: onlyinyourstate.com/nominate

One of Wisconsin’s lesser-known islands, St. Feriole Island is situated on a backwater channel of the Mississippi River. Loaded with history, it was the location of Prairie du Chien when it was first established. However, due to persistent flooding and several fires, the city was moved to its present location on the mainland. Visit the island today, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities for recreational fun along with the historic Villa Louis estate, which has been transformed into a museum.

A 20-minute ferry ride is all it takes to reach Madeline Island, which is brimming with things to see and do. One of the island’s biggest draws is Big Bay State Park, which boasts miles of beaches, boardwalk trails, picnic areas, and a campground. The island is also home to another park – Big Bay Town Park, which is a top choice for hiking, swimming, biking, kayaking, and canoeing. Not an outdoor enthusiast? No problem; you can spend your time on the island soaking up some history at The Madeline Island Historical Museum or explore the charming town of La Pointe, where you’ll find shops, eateries, and the Inn of Madeline Island, so you can turn your day of fun into an overnight adventure.

Offering all the fun of a state park on an island, Brunet Island State Park is a dream come true for outdoors lovers. The immense natural beauty alone is sure to leave you in awe. Spend some time soaking in the sights and sounds of the island, which is located in the Chippewa River, and then enjoy its perks, which include hiking trails, a swimming beach, and campground.

Another state park with an island locale, Rock Island State Park provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Reaching the island requires two ferry rides; however, the effort is definitely worth it since the park boasts plenty of perks, including a 5.2-mile trail that encircles the island. Swimming is also an option and is allowed virtually anywhere on the island. Even better, there’s a campground, so your Rock Island fun doesn’t have to end when the day is done.

Washington Island may very well be Wisconsin’s most popular island – and rightfully so. One of the island’s best amenities is Schoolhouse Beach, which is filled with limestone pebbles instead of sand. Remember, taking the pebbles is prohibited, so make sure to leave them at the beach where they belong. The island is perfect for more than a day at the beach, though. Other notable sites include Fair Isle Books, The Art and Nature Center, Albatross Drive-in, and Fragrant Isle, an expansive lavender farm – complete with a shop.
So, ever been to any (or all) of the islands mentioned above? Did we leave your favorite off the list? Tell us in the comments section.
