Spend The Night In Wisconsin’s Most Majestic Castle For An Unforgettable Experience
There was a time when lumber barons were kings in Wisconsin, building huge fortunes off harvesting trees in Northern forests. Some of these barons built castle-like homes with their riches and while the days of the lumber boom are long over, some of these magnificent homes remain.
Castle La Crosse is one of those houses and it’s now a bed & breakfast that welcomes guests. Get a taste of the royal life – here’s a look at what you can experience at Castle La Crosse.
The home was built in 1892 for Nymphus B. Holway, and his wife, Jessie, by local architects Hugo Schick and Gustav Stolze. No expense was spared - they aimed to build a true castle, complete with a solid limestone exterior.
The castle features a tower that rises above the home, a hallmark of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. While the lumber baron died before the home was complete, his wife lived here until 1920. She sold the castle to the Diocese of La Crosse, which used it as a bishop's residence before selling the building to a private buyer.
The first thing guests encounter when they enter the castle is the grand staircase. These beautiful stairs lead the way to the guest suites, passing ornate wood carvings and delicate stained glass windows.
The castle's library room is also spectacular - the walls and ceiling are covered in rich wood paneling and it is anchored by the original fireplace. It's an ideal place to relax with a book or to play a game at the game table.
The house features five guest suites, all with private baths, free wi-fi, and lavish morning breakfast. Learn more about the castle here and if you’re interested in more charming inns, here are some you should visit.
