The Atmosphere Is As Good As The Food At This Wisconsin Drive-In

No visit to Washington Island would be complete without a stop by Albatross Drive-In. It’s been an island staple for decades. And while it may be the tasty grub, which includes a slew of signature burgers and ice cream treats, that initially draws diners to the drive-in, it’s the amazing outdoor area that causes them to linger for hours. Located on Washington Island, Albatross Drive-In is just a hop, skip, and…a short ferry ride away. Easy to access, it’s just 1.5 miles from the ferry dock.

A Washington Island landmark, the drive-in has been in business since 1977. More specifically, it’s been in the business of burgers since 1977.

The seasonal drive-in opens its doors during Memorial Day weekend and closes them on Columbus Day. And each year, like clockwork, hungry patrons flock to the eatery to fill up on all their favorites.

Serving up a classic drive-in fare, the menu features a variety of fast food eats and sweets.

But it’s the burgers that Albatross Drive-In is most known for.

Sure to delight burger lovers of all calibers, the menu includes a variety of specialty burgers with topping combinations that range from typical to not-so-typical.

Though each burger boasts its own unique flavor, they all start off the same – with meat that’s ground fresh right on the island and then formed into patties by hand.

And since all appetites aren’t created equal, neither are the burgers at Albatross Drive-In. All burgers come with your choice of a ¼-pound patty or ½-pound patty.

While burgers are the drive-in’s specialty, its *ice cream is a real treat!*

The sweet selection includes cones, sundaes, root beer floats, 2.5-pound banana splits, and 60 flavors of custom-made shakes and malts.

Remember, everything at Albatross Drive-In is home cooked and made-to-order, so, like the sign says, you’ll likely have a bit of a wait.

Luckily, though, the drive-in’s grounds are as enjoyable as the fare. In addition to tables and umbrellas, there are glider swings for adults and a sandbox with toys for children.

The perks also include Alby’s Nest, a tiki bar located right behind the drive-in. Pull up a chair at the festive watering hole and let all your cares drift away as you sip on Door County beer and wine as well as Washington Island hard cider.
