It’s winter now, but it’s never too early to start planning for summer vacations. Though it’s a landlocked state, West Virginia has some beautiful waterfront areas. Here are a few ideas if you’re looking to be by the water:

1. Summersvile Lake
Whether you’re looking for a nice beach to lay on or a place to swim, kayak or scuba dive, Summersville Lake, with its 2700 acres of water, has it all.
2. Hawks Nest
Hawks Nest State Park Lodge offers beautiful views of the New River Gorge National River area and is home to many birds of prey including hawks, turkey vultures, black vultures and the occasional bald and golden eagles. The lodge, built in 1967, has 31 rooms.
3. The Resort at Glade Springs
The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia has a great place for canoeing, fishing and kayaking, Mallard Lake. They offer boat and standup paddle boarding rentals.
4. The New River at Fayetteville
The New River offers also sorts of things, from beautiful scenery to a great place to raft or kayak. And hiking trails in the area are lots of fun. Restaurants in Fayetteville are delicious, too.
5. Summit Lake
Summit Lake in Greenbrier County is a popular spot for fishermen, as it has plenty of panfish and bass. There are also several hiking trails in the area of the lake, including one that goes all the way around the body of water.

7. Tygart Lake
Tygart Lake State Park overlooks the 10-mile long, 1,750-acre Tygart Lake in Grafton. There’s fishing and boating and a lodge that overlooks the lake.

Stonewall Resort is right on the banks of the lake and it’s a great place to visit. The lake is 2,630 acres where you can relax on a pontoon boat, canoe, fishing boat, kayak, paddleboat, aqua cycle or stand up paddle board. There are also hiking trails in the area and a golf course.
9. Cheat Lake

10. Oglebay Resort and Conference Center
Wheeling’s Oglebay Resort and Conference Center has Schennk Lake, which offers boating, kayaking and fishing. The lake is stocked with catfish, trout and bass. There are also walking and jogging paths in the area and a playground.
11. The Glen Ferris Inn in Fayette County
Glen Ferris Inn in Fayette County is a historic hotel overlooking the beautiful Kanawha Falls. It may have been built as early as 1815.
