8 Places You Recognize From West Virginia That Showed Up In Famous Movies
Surprisingly enough, West Virginia has been the setting of several movies over the years. How many of these places have you recognized as they came on the screen during famous movies?

The Deer Hunter, a 1978 war drama film, and Super 8, a 2011 movie, were filmed partially in Weirton, W.Va. The Deer Hunter stars Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Savage, John Cazale, Meryl Streep, and George Dzundza. Weirton was used to film mill and trailer shots in The Deer Hunter. Super 8 was filmed on Main Street in Weirton. The J.J. Abrams movie is about a group of friends who witness a train crash and investigate a series of unexplained events.

The 2003 movie "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton," which starred Topher Grace and Kate Bosworth, was filmed almost entirely in Fayetteville.

Sandstone Falls in Hinton (Summers County) was featured in the 1994 movie "Lassie." The plot of this movie had Lassie rescuing someone from a waterfall, but falling herself and ultimately surviving.

The 2006 movie "We Are Marshall" was shot on the campus of Marshall University and in surrounding Huntington. It told the story of the tragic plane crash the killed the school's 1970 football team.

Spring Hill Cemetery, where a memorial stands to those lost in the Marshall University plane crash is also featured in "We Are Marshall." The cemetery is involved in a pivotal scene in the movie.

Sommersby, a 1992 movie with Richard Gere, Jodie Foster and James Earl Jones, featured Snowshoe Mountain in an opening scene.

This church in Greenbrier County was made to look like a courthouse for a scene in the movie "Child of God."

Thurmond was the setting for the movie "Matewan," a 1987 film about the Battle of Matewan, a coal miners' strike in 1920.
