Found along the Tygart River, Valley Falls is a series of wide breathtaking cascades that span the river. Walk along the huge boulders on the riverbanks and soak in the glorious sights and sounds at this state park. This famed natural wonder is known as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in West Virginia. Address: 720 Valley Falls Road, Fairmont, WV 26554. Learn more here.
At an impressive 57-feet-tall, Blackwater Falls is a sight to behold. From a perch on the observation deck, you can view the majestic cascades as they tumble over rock ledges. At Blackwater Falls State Park, you'll also have the opportunity to visit Elekala Falls. This smaller and more serene waterfall is a little slice of paradise and definitely worth a side trip while you're at the park. A true natural wonder for the ages, and a must-visit on our wine and waterfalls day trip in West Virginia. Address: 1584 Blackwater Lodge Road, Davis, WV 26260.
Just a short 10-15 minute drive will take you to Douglas Falls. This hidden gem is accessible by a short hike from the end of a dirt road. Are there any other wineries in West Virginia worth visiting?
There are all sorts of incredible places to visit in West Virginia, including a whole handful of locally owned and high-quality wineries. We’d recommend heading to the Forks of Cheat Winery in Morgantown, or perhaps head to the West Whitehill Winery in Moorefield. It’s located in the Valley View Golf Club, so you can play a game while you’re on-site. Locals also rave about the Summersville-located Kirkwood Winery and Isaiah Morgan Distillery for its low-key aesthetic and great gifts to take home to the family. Chestnut Ridge Winery in Spencer is also a winner, known for its lush natural landscaping and delicious vino.
Where else can I find the most beautiful waterfalls in West Virginia?
There’s no lack of waterfall-centric beauty in the Mountain State. From Brush Creek Falls to the south to the stunning Valley Falls State Park in the north, West Virginia is rife with beautiful natural wonders. Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge is perhaps one of the most popular, but the Falls of Hill Creek and the gushing natural spring of Douglas Falls are both great spots to visit as well. Babcock State Park is located in Clifftop, West Virginia, and offers all sorts of outdoor recreation activities like hiking and picnicking. It’s the perfect spot to stop for the whole family.
What are the most unique and best day trips in West Virginia?
If you’re looking to get out of the house, then there’s no better way to experience the Mountain State than a quick day trip. The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge is a great spot for everyone in the family, with insect guides and binoculars available at the visitor’s center. It’s a prime spot for young adventurers! Hiking at Coopers Rock State Forest is akin to the most beautiful fairy tale landscape, and a quick jaunt to Shepherdstown will give you the small town feel you might find yourself craving during life’s busy seasons. If you’re really looking for an escape from reality, then a ride on the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad just might fit the bill.
