Prepare To Share The Road As Turtles Emerge From Hibernation Across West Virginia
Spring is an amazing time of year. Life abounds as plants and animals emerge from winter dormancy. And one of the animals that has become active again in recent weeks after months of hibernation is the turtle!
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here: onlyinyourstate.com/nominate

And many of them can live for 50 to 100 years.

Turtles have built-in homing devices that help guide them to their favorite haunts, but sometimes the journey means crossing a road or two.

So drivers, watch out for these little guys in the next few weeks, and do what you safely can to avoid them.

If you do choose to carry the turtle out of harm's way, make sure you are clearly visible in both directions to any oncoming traffic.

Otherwise, you might confuse its inner compass.

Enjoy spotting these little guys over the next few months as they bask near a pond or river, plod through the woods, or attempt to cross a road near you!
