With the former name of "Bath" and the tagline of "America's first spa," you know one of the top historical attractions at Berkeley Springs are the mineral springs the area is famous for.

These are the same springs that Native Americans used for thousands of years before white settlers came through the area, and they are also renown for their use by President George Washington.
There are now multiple spas near the springs that utilize the mineral water to pamper their guests, including the facilities at Berkeley Springs State Park as well as the privately owned Atasia Spa and Renaissance Spa.

Another popular historic site in Berkeley Springs is the Berkeley Castle, otherwise known as the Samuel Taylor Suit Cottage. The beautiful stone building overlooks the town from its regal perch high on the mountainside.

Samuel Taylor Suit, a Maryland politician in the late 1800s, began construction on the castle for his young wife, but he died before it could be finished. His wife had the building finished and lived there until her fortune was spent. The castle has gone through several uses, including as a camp, but it is not currently open to the public.
To learn more about the history of the area, make sure to stop by the free Museum of Berkeley Springs in the second floor of the 1815 Roman Bath House in the Berkeley Springs State Park.

While there, you can pick up some information about the driving route known as the Washington Heritage Trail, which passes through Berkeley Springs.
The Washington Heritage Trail will take you to nearby Prospect Peak, where the founding fathers were said to stand and gaze at the prospects westward as they contemplated expansion.
